Highly influential and hysterically funny, 2016’s Deadpool is one of the best superhero movies to come out in the last decade and also one of the funniest, second only to its 2018 sequel, Deadpool 2. With its slick writing, superior humor, much-deserved & much-needed R-rating, and the comedic star power of Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool was destined for greatness and still making comic book fans laugh.
While fans wait for the third Deadpool movie – which will officially be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – there’s never been a better time to look back on all the hilarious scenes that made up the original Deadpool.
10“How Long Can We Keep This Up?”
Shortly after meeting, Wade and Vanessa have a coital montage that spans a calendar year, highlighting various holidays in ways that are more hilarious than the last. Starting from Valentine’s Day, the two engage in different scenarios and positions that correspond to each holiday – for Chinese New Years, there’s a Year of the Dog joke, and for International Women’s Day, the two swap positions, making for a subversive bit that adds to the overall hysterical sequence.
In a flashback that introduces who Wade Wilson was before he became Deadpool, audiences see that he’s a mercenary who’s been paid to threaten a stalker. Wade breaks into a man’s apartment and orders a pizza as he waits in the bathroom.
When it turns out that the delivery guy is the stalker, Wade still threatens to shoot the man’s cat, since apparently Wade had just used kitty litter in the bathroom. It’s so absurd and random, there’s no choice but to laugh.
8“All The Dinosaurs Feared The T-Rex”
After Colossus and Negasonic’s interfere in Deadpool’s revenge plan, allowing his arch-nemesis Francis to get away, Deadpool can’t help but take his rage out on the enormous, metallic mutant. Deadpool decides to punch and kick in classic Monty Python Black Knight fashion, where each limb breaks on impact and he just keeps going while firing off hilarious one-liners. The best part of this scene is when Deadpool – with both wrists broken as he’s hunched over like a Tyrannosaurus – says, “All the dinosaurs feared the T-Rex.”
7“Bit By A Radioactive Shar Pei”
Jokes poking fun at Deadpool’s skin and face make up a fair amount of the film’s dialogue. When he reveals to Francis that it is indeed Wade Wilson that’s been killing people to get to him, one of the funniest lines of the movie is said. After taking off his mask, Francis says, “well hello, gorgeous” to which Deadpool says, “yeah, like I got bit by a radioactive shar pei.” This is an homage not only to Deadpool’s comic book bae, Spider-Man, but also to a 2004 comic where Deadpool described himself as “Ryan Re[y]nolds crossed with a shar pei.”
6Break That 4th Wall
After Wade learns he has cancer, he goes to the bar to talk to his buddy Weasel, who hands him a business card saying it’s from a “real Grim Reaper- type” in the back of the room. Deadpool is all about breaking the 4th wall, and one of the best examples in the film is when Weasel hands him the card and convinces Wade to go over there by saying, “I don’t know. Might further the plot.” TJ Miller’s delivery just makes it funnier.
5We Don’t Talk About X-Men Origins
As most X-Men movie-goers may know, Deadpool wasn’t the first time the beloved Merc with a Mouth was on the silver screen. Unfortunately, Wade Wilson’s film debut was in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine where Ryan Reynolds’ performance couldn’t save the literal butchering of the character.
There are a few references to Origins throughout Deadpool and the funniest one is an actual action figure from the movie that appears when Wade says how things “went sideways in the most colossal way… well maybe not the most.”
4“You Are… HAUNTING”
Another hilarious scene involving TJ Miller’s Weasel happens after Wade reveals his new appearance and Weasel just gives a slew of beautiful & hysterical insults that describe Wade’s new face. There’s a reference to Freddy Krueger and a topographical map of Utah, avocadoes, the stuff of nightmares – just about everything that comes out of Weasel’s mouth is comedy gold and the scene is topped off with Wade coming up with his alias “Deadpool… CAPTAIN Deadpool” which is so random and funny. It’s an uproarious scene.
3Seltzer Water & Lemon Are Better Than A Tide Pen
In the montage that shows the evolution of Deadpool’s costume, there’s a really funny sight gag where audiences see him in a laundromat hopelessly trying to get blood out of his white costume with a Tide bleach pen.
This prompts his future roomie, Blind Al, to offer advice on cleaning bloodstains – or to just wear red, right before calling him a dumb***. The rest of the montage is pretty humorous too, like the slow Zamboni and the quick glimpse at Deadpool’s unicorn alone time.
Every scene that involves Blind Al is one laugh after the other, from Wade getting into his disgusting-yet-comfy Crocs to their roommate banter about various IKEA furniture, topped off with Deadpool’s Swedish pronunciations of different IKEA products. Even on paper, the idea of Deadpool living in a duplex with an elderly blind woman is hilarious and the fact the scene is bookended with Deadpool farting as he leaves the room while proclaiming “hashtag drive by” is enough to make anyone laugh.
1“You Were Droning On!”
After Deadpool & Co. save Vanessa, Deadpool finally beats Francis and is about to finish him off. But right before he pulls the trigger, Colossus stops him and goes into a monologue about what it means to be a real hero, talking about how Deadpool should spare his enemy. Colossus’ speech is cut off when Deadpool shoots Francis in the head, causing Colossus to instantly vomit. For some reason, seeing an enormous, metallic man puke his guts out is extremely funny.
Deadpool’s Morena Baccarin Celebrated Women’s Day
Any fan of comic book movies would be hard pressed to pick a favorite sequence from Tim Miller’s Deadpool. The film is jam-packed with hilarious moments, but one of the most noteworthy is the entirely NSFW “Calendar Girl” scene in which Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) celebrate every major national holiday with a hilariously “athletic” sex montage. As many of you already know, yesterday was International Women’s Day, and Ms. Baccarin decided to honor the holiday by referencing Deadpool‘s hilarious calendar joke about the holiday at Ryan Reynolds’ expense. Check it out below to see for yourself.
We’re sure that picture will either make you cringe or laugh — or both. Although the image is a bit fuzzy, it’s quite obviously a shot from the “Calendar Girl” Deadpool scene in which Vanessa puts on a strap-on to honor International Women’s Day. It’s a moment that generated a ton of laughs in theaters when the film debuted, but it also seems to have resonated with audiences as well. We’re not sure if it was intentional or not, but the International Women’s Day joke has taken on a life of its own and become one of the most progressive jokes from the entire film.
Considering the way Ryan Reynolds’ already portrays himself on social media, we have a very distinct feeling that he is just fine with the joke. After all, have you seen some of the insults and general mockery that he regularly sends Hugh Jackman’s way? What goes around comes around, and he seems like a pretty good sport about it.
We will have to wait and see whether or not we will receive more sex montages like this as the Deadpool franchise presses forward into the future. Morena Baccarin is not officially listed as a member of Deadpool 2‘s cast on IMDB yet, but it would make plenty of sense for Vanessa to return in the sequel. The recently released teaser for the next installment featured numerous Firefly posters in the background, which seems like a not so subtle hint that she could return — given the fact that she played a significant role on that short-lived series.
Of course, considering Deadpool‘s utterly insane fourth wall breaks, this could simply be another Easter egg. Let’s hope Vanessa returns, and let’s hope that she eventually becomes the X-Men character known as Copycat.
We will bring you more information related to the development, production, and release of Deadpool 2 as more details become available to us. The film is currently slated to hit theaters in 2018.
You look like you could use some more Wade Wilson in your life right now. Check out the recently released Deadpool 2 teaser (which accompanied the debut of Logan) on the next page for a better look at Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with the Mouth in action!
